Bodybuilding has been part of our own lives for many years. We follow competitions, know athletes and coaches personally and understand how much discipline, planning and hard work are required to present an impressive physique on stage.

What is competitive bodybuilding?

In a bodybuilding competition, athletes present their physiques to a panel of judges. Depending on the federation and division, criteria may include muscularity, symmetry, proportions, definition, stage presence and posing.

The aim is not simply to build as much muscle as possible. Successful competitors must present a balanced physique and meet the specific requirements of their chosen division.

Which bodybuilding divisions are there?

The available divisions vary between federations and events. Well-known categories include Bodybuilding, Classic Bodybuilding, Classic Physique, Men’s Physique, Women’s Physique, Bikini, Wellness, Figure and Fitness.

Each division has different expectations regarding muscularity, proportions, definition, posing, stage presentation and competition clothing. Athletes should therefore study the rules of their federation before beginning their preparation.

How are bodybuilding competitions judged?

Judging criteria depend on the division. Traditional bodybuilding places particular emphasis on muscular development, symmetry, proportions and definition. Other categories may give greater importance to overall shape, stage presence and a level of muscularity suited to the division.

Competitors are compared directly alongside one another and must perform mandatory poses or presentation rounds. Small differences in conditioning, posing and stage presence can have a decisive influence on the final placing.
