Why Do Some Boxing Gloves Feel Tighter Inside? - Fit, Hand Compartment & Brand Differences

You try on two pairs of boxing gloves with the same OZ rating – yet one feels comfortably snug while your hand has noticeably more room inside the other.

Many beginners are surprised by this. After all, 10 OZ, 12 OZ, 14 OZ and 16 OZ are often presented by retailers almost as if they were different glove sizes.

This is where one of the biggest misunderstandings when buying boxing gloves begins:

OZ is not your hand size.

The actual fit of a boxing glove depends on its cut, hand compartment, padding, thumb position, inner lining and overall construction.

What Does OZ Actually Mean in Boxing Gloves?

OZ stands for “ounce”. One ounce is approximately 28.35 grams.

In boxing gloves, OZ indicates the weight of the glove. Common glove weights include:

  • 8 OZ
  • 10 OZ
  • 12 OZ
  • 14 OZ
  • 16 OZ

Important: OZ is not a conventional size such as S, M, L or XL.

A 16 OZ boxing glove therefore does not automatically have a significantly larger hand compartment than a 12 OZ glove.

Much of the difference in weight comes from the padding and construction of the glove.

This is why two different 14 OZ boxing gloves can feel completely different on your hand.

Why Do So Many People Think OZ Means Size?

Unfortunately, this is partly due to the way boxing gloves are sometimes sold.

Some retailers present 10 OZ, 12 OZ, 14 OZ and 16 OZ almost like conventional sizes. For someone who is new to boxing equipment, this can easily look like:

10 OZ = S
12 OZ = M
14 OZ = L
16 OZ = XL

As a general rule, this is not technically correct.

Of course, the dimensions of a particular glove model may change somewhat between different OZ versions. However, you cannot turn this into a universal hand-size chart.

A compact 14 OZ boxing glove can even feel tighter than a more generously cut 12 OZ model.

So the recommendation should not simply be:

“You have large hands, so you need 16 OZ.”

The appropriate OZ weight depends largely on what you intend to use the gloves for. Whether your hand actually fits comfortably inside the glove is a question of fit.

OZ and Fit Are Two Different Things

The difference is actually quite simple:

OZ: How heavy is the boxing glove?

Fit: How does the boxing glove fit your hand?

Several factors influence the fit:

  • Width of the hand compartment
  • Length of the hand compartment
  • Overall glove cut
  • Position and thickness of the padding
  • Thumb position
  • Inner lining
  • Wrist construction
  • Shape of your hand
  • Boxing wraps worn underneath

Someone with large hands may therefore fit perfectly into a particular 12 OZ model, while another glove in 14 OZ may feel far too tight.

So What Is the OZ Rating Used For?

The OZ rating is still very important.

Different glove weights are used depending on the type of training. For sparring, meaning controlled practice fighting with a training partner, more heavily padded boxing gloves are generally used.

Other types of training may require different glove weights.

Which OZ rating is appropriate for you therefore depends on factors such as the type of training, intended use and sometimes the requirements of your boxing gym or coach.

But the OZ number does not automatically answer the question:

“Will this glove fit my hand?”

These are two different things.

Why Do Hand Compartments Differ So Much?

There is no universal fit standard that every boxing glove manufacturer follows.

Each manufacturer develops its own cuts and constructions. Even two models from the same brand can feel noticeably different when you put them on.

One model may have a very compact construction that closely surrounds the hand. Another may deliberately provide more room inside the hand compartment.

Padding also plays an important role.

More padding does not automatically mean more space for your hand. Depending on the glove's construction, a heavily padded model can actually feel very compact inside.

Compact or Roomy – Which Is Better?

There is no universal answer.

A compact boxing glove can provide a very secure and direct fit. Your hand moves less inside the glove and the glove can feel very controlled.

However, if you have large or wide hands, an extremely compact hand compartment can quickly become uncomfortable.

A hand compartment that is too large is not ideal either. If your hand has too much room to move, the glove may not sit properly.

Ideally, a boxing glove should fit securely and feel controlled without squeezing your hand uncomfortably or painfully.

Different Brands – Different Fits

This is exactly why choosing boxing gloves purely from an online size chart can be difficult.

At Vikingstore, we carry boxing gloves from brands including LEONE1947, Cleto Reyes, Fairtex, Sting, Venum, Phantom and Benlee.

These manufacturers use different cuts, padding systems and constructions. As a result, the way their gloves feel on your hand can vary considerably.

However, you should also be careful with general statements such as:

“Brand X always fits tight.”

It is rarely that simple.

Different models from the same manufacturer can have very different cuts.

A brand may offer one glove with a very compact fit while another model from the same range provides a much roomier hand compartment.

For this reason, we prefer to judge the individual model rather than an entire brand.

Boxing Gloves and Muay Thai Gloves Can Feel Different

The combat sport itself can also influence glove construction.

A traditional boxing glove may be designed differently from a Muay Thai glove.

In Muay Thai, for example, the clinch plays an important role. The clinch is a close-range fighting position in which the fighters control and hold each other. Blocking techniques and other movements can also differ from traditional boxing.

For this reason, Muay Thai gloves may differ from traditional boxing gloves in terms of mobility, shape and overall feel.

Brands in our range such as Fairtex, LEONE1947 and Venum offer models designed specifically for the demands of Muay Thai.

So don't choose a glove based solely on its appearance, brand or OZ rating. Also consider what you actually intend to use it for.

What Should You Consider If You Have Large or Wide Hands?

If you have large or particularly wide hands, look for a glove with sufficient room in the hand compartment.

A glove that is too tight can quickly become uncomfortable, particularly when boxing wraps are worn underneath.

If your fingers are pressing hard against the end of the glove or your hand is being squeezed uncomfortably from the sides, the cut of that particular model may simply not suit your hand.

And this is where the OZ misunderstanding appears again.

The solution is not automatically:

“Then I just need more OZ.”

A different model with a roomier hand compartment may be a much better solution.

What About Small or Narrow Hands?

We also see the opposite problem.

People with small or particularly narrow hands can have too much room inside certain boxing gloves.

The hand may then feel less secure or move around too much inside the glove.

Again, choosing purely according to the OZ rating doesn't solve the problem.

For narrow hands, a more compactly cut model can often provide a much better fit.

LEONE1947 Offers an Interesting Intermediate Size

LEONE1947 offers a useful option with some of its boxing gloves: 10 OZ M.

These gloves still weigh 10 OZ, but they have a narrower cut. This makes them particularly interesting for women, teenagers and people with smaller or narrower hands.

This is also a perfect example of why OZ and hand size are not the same thing.

A standard 10 OZ glove and a 10 OZ M glove can have the same weight while offering a different fit for the hand.

Boxing Wraps Change the Fit

Another important point is often forgotten when buying boxing gloves:

Boxing wraps are normally worn underneath your gloves.

Boxing wraps are long strips of fabric wrapped around the hand, knuckles and wrist to provide additional support and stability during training.

Naturally, they also take up space inside the glove.

A boxing glove that fits perfectly without wraps may suddenly feel considerably tighter once you put your wraps on.

The difference can be particularly noticeable with longer wraps or if you use more material around your knuckles.

Whenever possible, try boxing gloves while wearing the same wraps you intend to use during training.

New Boxing Gloves Can Feel a Little Tighter

A brand-new boxing glove usually feels different from one that has been used for several months.

The materials, inner lining and padding can adapt slightly to your hand with regular use. This can be particularly noticeable with high-quality leather boxing gloves.

A new glove can therefore feel slightly tighter and more compact at first.

However, this does not mean you should buy a glove that feels painfully tight.

Strong pressure points, pain or numb fingers are not signs of a good fit.

Buying a glove that is clearly too tight and simply hoping it will eventually fit is not a good solution.

Why Trying On Boxing Gloves Is So Helpful

Size charts and product descriptions can provide useful guidance.

What they don't know is the shape of your hand.

Two people with the same body weight can have completely different hands. One may have long, narrow fingers while another has a wide palm and thicker fingers.

And two boxing gloves weighing exactly 14 OZ can fit completely differently.

This is why we are happy to let customers try different boxing gloves at our Vikingstore locations in Bern and St. Gallen.

You can compare different brands and models directly and will often notice immediately which cut suits your hand better.

Especially if you have particularly large, small, wide or narrow hands, trying on different gloves can help prevent an expensive mistake.

The Most Expensive Boxing Glove Isn't Automatically the Best Fit

A premium boxing glove may offer excellent materials, sophisticated padding and outstanding workmanship.

But if its cut doesn't suit your hand, none of that changes the fact that it is the wrong glove for you.

Another model may simply feel much more comfortable.

Your decision should therefore not be based exclusively on price, brand, appearance or OZ.

A good boxing glove needs to suit your hand and your training.

Conclusion: OZ Is Weight – Not Your Hand Size

The most important point from this article is simple:

OZ stands for ounce and is a unit of weight. One OZ equals approximately 28.35 grams.

In boxing gloves, the OZ rating describes the weight of the glove.

OZ is not a conventional hand size.

Even though 10 OZ, 12 OZ, 14 OZ and 16 OZ are sometimes presented by retailers as if they were different sizes, don't let this confuse you.

Two gloves with exactly the same OZ rating can fit completely differently.

The actual fit depends on factors such as the hand compartment, cut, padding, thumb position, inner lining, boxing wraps and your individual hand shape.

A good boxing glove therefore needs to suit your hand, your wraps, your combat sport and your training.

And that's exactly why your training partner's favourite boxing glove might be perfect for them – and completely wrong for you.
